Against the Clock by Caitiff

It would all soon be over, Detective Ted Daniels thought. Normal police procedure had been useless in nabbing Jimmy the Weasel. Just like his name sake, Jimmy always managed to squirm out of any charge brought against him because of lack of evidence. But Ted knew something else about Jimmy. To run his operation, Jimmy needed to keep some kind of records. And Ted knew that those records had to be in the house of Scotty McKrackin, Jimmy’s trusted friend. Of course going to get those records was hardly on the up and up. So he couldn’t tell anyone what he was doing.
A little jimmy on the lock and with XXXX drawn, Ted walked into the back door. It was dead quiet.
Maybe it was because Ted was so busy looking into the house for any sign of trouble or maybe Scotty McKrackin was just a really good sneak. But in either case Ted didn’t see McKrackin coming up from from behind. By the time Ted sensed a presence behind him, it was too late. A hard thud, a bright pain and everything went black.
..................................
Ted awoke slowly and painfully, a low groan escaping his lips in Scotty McKrackin’s basement. This alerted his captor who was standing over Ted as he came too.
“What the ..MMPH!!”, was all Ted could say before Scotty McKrackin clamped his hand over Ted’s mouth.
“Got to keep you quiet”, Scotty said, one hand hand gagging ted while the other pulled a leather ball attached to a length of leather from his pocket. With one quick motion, Scotty shoved the ball gag cruelly into Ted’s mouth.
“Mmm-MMnnph!”, Ted moaned furiously through the gag. Desperately he tried to move but he found his hands and feet securely bound with rope.
“I was told you might be dropping by.”, Scotty said as he tied a white cloth over Ted’s already gagged mouth to secure the ball gag even more, “So I whipped up a little surprise for you. Unfortunately it’s not quite ready” Scotty checked the ropes binding Ted and then walked upstairs.
If I’m going to get away, this is my chance, Ted thought. Ted was a strong man. He worked out every day and had the muscles to show for it. But bulging muscles didn't’ help much when you were bound and gagged. Ted twisted and strained ot get loose from the ropes binding him helpless. But try as he might, he didn't’ seem to be making much headway. Then Scotty came back downstairs.. with a BOMB!!

I was going to save this for after I had left.”, Scotty said casually to his hostage. Tightly gagged, Ted could only glare at Scotty as he explained his plan. “You see, I already have a ticket a small nation with no extradition. And those records will be hidden again. But to cover my tracks I’m going ot use this little baby. And you’re going to go with it. You’ve made some friends of mine very angry. I think I should get a little extra bonus for taking care of you.” Scotty set the bomb on a chair nex to Ted and then activated it. It’s ticking echoed throughout the room.
“Mmmm!!”, Ted grunted angrily. But it was in vain. he was tied and helpless. With this stupid gag filing his mouth, he couldn’t even yell for help.
“Well, enjoy your last few moments of life. You have ten minutes.”, Scotty gloated before grabbing a suit case and walking out, leaving ted alone to spend the last moments of his life bound and gagged in the basement.
“ As he struggled, ted realised that ten minutes wasn't’ really that long of a time. And he seemed no closer to getting free of the ropes. What to do?
Fortunately Scotty hadn't’ tied Ted to the chair. He still had enough movement to hop up off the chair. After a few moments of making sure he had his balance, Ted hopped on bound feet to the chair where the bomb ticked away. Ted could see the wires and for a moment he considered trying to disarm it while he still tied up. But looking at the complexity of the wiring made ted reconsider his plan.
Looking at the clock, Ted realised he already wasted most of the time he had. His only chance was to get out of the house before it blew. Franticly he hopped as best he could towards the door. Getting up the stairs would be tricky. Doing door knobs with his hands bound behind his back could slow him down even more. Ted doubted his chances. But it was the only chance he had.
Sweat was now streaming down Ted’s Face and neck. With his hands bound behind him, Ted couldn’t wipe the trickle of sweat from his eyes and he grunted and cursed into his gag in frustration. His entire body was becoming soaked. And this was what was going to save Ted. Almost without realising it, the sweat had acted as a lubricant between his hands and the rope. In his twisting, Ted managed to finally get his hands free!
Ted wasted no time that his good luck had given him. He undid his feet, ran up the stairs and out of the house just before it burst into flames.
Looking at the flaming wreck that had once housed the proof he so desperately thought, ted realised that Jimmy the Weasel had escaped again. He would never catch Scotty and the records were hidden again.
But Ted wasn’t going to quit. He’d bring down Jimmy another day.
